Brown Gold Skull Halloween Makeup

Skull is one of those typical Halloween makeup looks that you can do. Everyone gets it, everyone knows what it is and it's fairly challenging to draw. Since I never posted any skull Halloween looks, I decided to give it a go this year. Part of this inspiration for a different skull look - a brown one - is also Mariah Leonard's Instagram skull post. I took inspiration from her to do a more subtle brown version of the typical skull. I also paired it with a metallic gold shadow for some added sparkle.

I started my skull makeup with a basic foundation, concealer and powder routine. Then I took a white eye pencil and sketched out the basic skull shape. It's easier to do with a white pencil, since you can erase it really quickly.

After that I started with a light warm brown eyeshadow and I shaded the parts that are usually black and represent a hole in the skull. Then I took a darker brown and just built up the intensity by applying lighter shades in the center of each hole and using darker brown shades at the edges. This will give you the illusion of a hollow and depth. I used about three different colors of brown, because I didn't want it to look too dark. You can go further and use even darker shades.

After I shaded inside those hollow parts, I took a brown liquid eyeliner and outlined everything that I have drawn on before with a white pencil. This will give you a more precise and defined look. I also sketched out my teeth with an eyeliner.

After that I took a metallic liquid gold eyeshadow and colored out my teeth with it. I also used it as a winged eyeliner to give me more sparkle around the eyes. I am always up for more glam even with a more scary look.

To further define teeth, I took matte brown eyeshadow and went around teeth with it to make them stand out more. I also took that brown eyeliner and defined them a bit more. My advise to make teeth more realistic is to shade upper parts and make dents in the lower part with eyeshadow. No one has perfect teeth and they are not all tear shaped. I also decided to add gold metallic eyeshadow as a nose highlight. It really brigs the light back to the face and makes it dimensional. For more of a 3D effect I added a few lines around my eyes and mouth area. I used a thin pencil brush to draw a base with an eyeshadow and then went over it with brown liquid liner. That way the eyeshadow casts a shadow for that liner line.

Since I skipped on a black liner, I put on false eyelashes. Nothing too dramatic, just something with a nice volume and length. I also applied white eye pencil on the lower rim of my eye to make it look brighter. In the inner corner I added the same gold metallic eyeshadow. You can also draw on a few cracks in the skull on the forehead and around the chin.

I found it very difficult to draw a line on the sides of my face, because I have a problem with my eye vision in general and it was harder to draw from the sides. Just keeping it real. If you have someone by your side, you may ask them to help you with the cheekbones.

I won't say that this is an easy look. It's definitely time consuming, but I think it will look really nice once you go out and everyone complements your effort. I like this brown version more, because it looks subtle and prettier in a way. Black is a lot more intense and scary looking. I also love gold metallic details that bring light to the face and add something different to a usual black and white skull look.  Would you wear it or do you prefer a classic black skull makeup?
