Review: Yves Saint Laurent Tatouage Couture Liquid Matte Lip Stain - 23

I am not one for buying expensive lipsticks, as I have found so many great formulas in much more affordable ranges. But I actually won this Yves Saint Laurent Tatouage Couture Liquid Matte Lip Stain in a giveaway and thought it would be nice to write a review of it on my blog. Surprisingly, this is very good.

Packaging

It comes in a matte transparent plastic packaging with metallic gold top and YSL design on it. It has such an interesting applicator. It's a sponge, but shaped like a diagonally cut off square. Sharper edges give you that precision to outline your lips without needing to use lip liner and sponge blends it out for a natural looking effect. Applicator does it all for you.

In it is 6 ml of product and it costs 37€ on Notino.

Formula

This is liquid matte lip stain and the name is correct. It's a lightweight creamy formula that is sheerer, which means it acts as a stain. Usually, Asian stains are very liquid, but this is more creamy. Pigmentation is sheerer, because it's supposed to be a stain like effect on the lips. Finish is definitely matte. Formula dries down fairly quick, in the matter of minutes.

It has fresh fruity scent to it.

Colors

On their official site there are 28 shades available. Shade selection is huge and there is something for everybody.  A lot of nudes, pinks, oranges and some crazier blackened berries.

I won this in a giveaway and was offered to choose the shade that I wanted. After some research of swatches on the internet I choose 23, because I wanted something very wearable. If I am going to get that expensive product, I want to get as much use out of it as possible.

23 is light to medium warm pink brown. It's that kind of my-lips-but-better nude shade.

Comparison

Yves Saint Laurent Tatouage Couture Matte Stain 23 - warm pinky brown nude.
Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor Forever -  this one is very similar to YSL, it's a bit more brown toned and even more peach based.
NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream Stockholm - slightly lighter and more peach toned version of that nude.
Avon Mark Epic Lip Lipstick Rosy Outlook - another lighter version, but also more pink toned.

Performance

They weren't lying when they said, it's lightweight. I have forgotten that I have it on my lips several times. If you have dry lips like me, this can get a bit drying after a while. It's a proper matte finish, but with a sheerer texture that makes it ultra wearable and so natural looking. Usual matte liquid lipsticks can be heavy looking and crusty. This formula moves with the lips and doesn't emphasize dry parts of the skin. It stays in place and is fairly long lasting, but not transfer proof. The drier it gets, the less it transfers, but there is still tiny bit of it left on the glass or skin.

Is it worth 37€? I wouldn't pay that much for it, but if your budget allows and you like this, go for it. I am cheaper when it comes to my lip products and wouldn't pay that price. That being said, this is one of the more refined formulas I have tried so far. I immediately noticed how effortless this applied on the lips and how lightweight it wore. It's definitely a much more sophisticated approach to matte lip products than those heavy matte liquid lipsticks. Packaging is lovely, applicator is one of its main advantages and it wears surprisingly good. If you want to treat yourself with an expensive lip product, this is definitely one of those that you won't regret, if this is the formula you're looking for. But if you don't get it, you won't miss out on anything either. I would say choose Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor of NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream for similar finish and wear on the lips.
